Day Thirty Four
Surrender…Attachments
I have been reminded many times by the Divine that I came into this world with no attachments and I will leave this world with no attachments. I have been told – There is nothing to hold onto unless you grasp onto it out of fear.
As was shared yesterday, all that you see before you is God’s creation. Your ego wants to believe – “It’s mine.” But in truth, there is nothing you can hold onto. It’s all temporary and when you leave this earth plane, the only thing you move forward with is your last breath. Your spirit is eternal and all else is temporary.
Reflect for a moment and ask yourself – When you leave this earth plane can you take anything with you – your body, your money, your children, your spouse, your pets, your career, your house, your car? Do you imagine you hold on because you are afraid to let go? Do you feel some of these attachments define who you are, and do you question who you would be without them?
I want to share a personal experience and life lesson about letting go of attachments during a very difficult time in my life. I had left my marriage, and everything was falling apart. One night, I woke up terrified with the realization that I was alone, and everything was changing. I dropped into a deep dark hole of despair and as I sat alone in my family room, I cried out to the angels. I had so many questions and I wanted answers.
Everything was being stripped away from me and I thought it defined who I was…
I left my home and was renting an apartment. I asked myself, who am I without a home?
I didn’t have a husband to take care of me. I asked myself, who am I if I am not a wife?
I didn’t have the kids all the time anymore. I asked myself, who am I when I am not a mother?
I had been in a car accident and I didn’t have a car. I asked myself, who am I without a car?
I was very low on money and I was within pennies of paying my bills. I asked myself, who am I without money?
Then, to torture myself even more, I did a 10-day lemonade fast to cleanse my body. I asked myself, who am I without food?
My reality at that time consisted of playing these roles and being fulfilled by these attachments. I truly believed they defined whom I was. I had been stripped of them all. In desperation, I pleaded with my angels, “Then tell me, who am I?” It was as if the dark room filled with light and I clearly heard and felt, “Who you are has never changed and will never change.” Beyond any doubt, I knew in that moment that the essence of who I am is the Divine and that no exterior situation, no role I played, no other person’s actions or thoughts, and no material possession or lack thereof, could ever change that. An overwhelming sense of peace and knowing flowed through my whole being and I just laughed out loud.
Pause and reflect for a moment. What are you attached to and how does it define who you are? Are you attached to …
- Your possessions of any kind?
- Your roles – as a parent, daughter, grandparent, caretaker, or your professional role?
- Your past or your future?
- Other people – spouse, children, parents, friends, co-workers?
- Money, success or failure?
- Self-imposed expectations or expectations from others?
Some of these attachments may make you feel safe, secure, and comfortable which is perfectly understandable. Just remember, when you hold on tight in fear and you are afraid to let go or it’s suddenly taken from you, no matter what, you will survive. You cannot not survive. You are a spiritual being having a human experience and everything in this human experience is temporary. You truly can’t hold on because it’s not yours to hold onto
Day Thirty Four
Trust…You are Already Whole and Complete
Being attached to something or someone is when you physically or energetically cling to it feeling a “need” to hold on. Let’s walk through this together to discern if attachments come from a place of fear or love.
As you have been unveiling the truth of who you are along this journey, you are gaining a clear understanding of the difference between your ego personality vs. your soul consciousness. You have been peeling the layers of untruths to reveal the truth once again – hidden inside the costume of your physical body you are a Divine being who was created in the image and likeness of God Himself. If God is whole and complete, and He created the entire universe, then would you imagine you are already whole and complete? Do you need anything outside you to define who you already are once you remember this truth? And maybe, that’s why you came into this lifetime with nothing but a single breath and you will leave this lifetime with nothing other than your last breath.
Your essence is already whole and complete and always has been and will be. Your ego believes it “needs” other people, situations, possessions, or defining roles, to feel worthy, valued, loved, important, complete, and needed. The ego never believes it has enough and it will always expect and want more. Your soul knows you are already enough, you are whole, and nothing or no one outside of you will complete you.
Your soul also knows that everyone else in your life is whole and complete even when their lives seem to be falling apart. What if they are exactly where they are meant to be for their own soul’s evolution? You can do all you can to support them but if you cling and hold on in fear it doesn’t serve them or yourself. Remember the story I previously shared decribing what I went through while going through my divorce. When my family and friends were in fear about my choices they projected their fear and attachments onto me. It was not supportive and it felt suffocating. The friends that listened to me and supported me with love and acceptance, empowered me to trust myself and my decisions one day at a time.
Take time to reflect today and bring awareness to your attachments. Discern if you are holding on or clinging because of fear – fear of change, fear of letting go, fear of losing control, fear of not having enough, or fear of knowing yourself and discovering who you will be without it.
Here are some of the opportunities that may be possible if you release yourself from attachments …
- Freedom to trust yourself, the Divine, and an abundant Universe filled with infinite possibilities
- Freedom to be yourself
- Freedom for others to be themselves and to find themselves
- Freedom to trust you are already enough just as you are
- Freedom from needing another person, situation, or a possession to define you
- Freedom to discover that you are already whole and complete within you
- Freedom to remember that who you really are can never change and will never change.
Day Thirty Four
Reflect and Journal…
Are you attached to …
Your possessions of any kind?
Your roles – as a parent, daughter, grandparent, caretaker, or your professional role?
Your past or your future?
Other people – spouse, children, parents, friends, co-workers?
Money, success or failure?
Self imposed expectations or expectations from others
Discern if you are holding on or clinging because of fear –
Fear of change?
Fear of letting go?
Fear of losing control?
Fear of not having enough?
Fear of knowing yourself and discovering who you will be without it?
Can you apply everything you’ve learned during the past 34 days and choose the freedom you desire to experience as you release attachments in your life.
Important note: Buddha is a master teacher who can support you in healing and releasing attachments. Buddha believed “the root of suffering is attachment”.
